FIRST LINES: Just before Thanksgiving going on three years back, I sat rocking with a good friend on the comfortable porch that fronts our town's oldest coffee shop. The morning was warm, almost two warm for mid-November. But a breeze with a cool edge helped me decide to take off my jacket or leave it on. We had been promised this "bonus day" at the coming edge of winter and I wanted to take full advantage of it ....
LAST LINES: The memory will remain of how my grandson and I set out exploring one day and came across these recollections of times gone by. And for me, especially, a man who the mere passage of time has worn into something like an antique himself, that ache in the heart that Maya Angelou described so perfectly had been softened by our experience--just a little.

When the lights go out at your house, it's usually because a storm has knocked a tree onto nearby power lines. That's when daily life suddenly gets knocked off track--especially for children. This story was written for them, although those of us who once were children ourselves also will enjoy these recollections from a time now so far in the past it seems like a dream.
